Taryell Simmons is a dedicated champion of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and currently serves as the Interim Director for the Office of Equity and Racial Justice for San Diego County. He is also the founder and host of the RISE Urban Nation Podcast, where he explores diverse perspectives and brings attention to issues impacting underserved communities. Taryell’s passion for EDI work grew after winning a startup weekend pitch competition hosted by Google and Techstars, where he was inspired to promote diversity in the tech startup space and provide critical resources to Black entrepreneurs.
With over a decade of experience, Taryell has made substantial contributions to workforce development, employee training, and strategic business coaching. Notably, he played a key role at the San Diego Workforce Partnership, where he implemented programs like Connect2Careers, providing internships and job opportunities to more than 5,000 youth. Under his leadership, the program expanded from a $500,000 summer initiative to a year-round $3 million effort.
Taryell’s leadership is exemplified through his participation as a RISE San Diego Urban Leadership graduate, his fellowship with the Rockwood Leadership Institute, and his role as a Board Director for Village UP.
