Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) is a Christian higher ed institution whose Biology-Chemistry program has been named a Preferred Provider of Life Sciences talent by the EDC for its quality curriculum that transitions students into high-demand careers within the industry. PLNU continues to find ways to help expand access to diverse, qualified talent for local companies which is crucial to growing the innovation economy.
The university has also launched a Pilot Biotech Initiative to foster and maintain partnerships with life sciences companies while promoting PLNU’s robust science program. The initiative focuses on recruiting underrepresented students by offering them full scholarships, research opportunities, mentors and internships. In doing so, PLNU can help support a talent pipeline for local life science companies.
PLNU has a thriving College of Health Sciences which includes the first physician assistant (PA) program in San Diego and Imperial Counties (which are both designated as Health Professions Shortage (HPSA) areas). The PA program has a strong focus on meeting the healthcare needs of underserved populations.
The university and the San Diego Padres have recently entered into a partnership to develop a state-of-the-art biomechanics lab at the Balboa campus. The lab will provide pitching and hitting mechanics evaluation for all levels of the Padres organization, including minor league affiliates. It also has the potential of serving PLNU athletes as well as players of all ages in San Diego. This will be a community asset and the university couldn’t be prouder to partner with the hometown team.
